History of Aitkin's Mutual Creamery

The village of Aitkin no longer has a creamery, though the last building that housed the creamery still stands (click here to see a photo). Cedar Strip boat on Display

Volunteers have repaired a Cedar Strip boat built by Arnold Westling during the 1950’s and it is currently on display in building #2 with several outboard motors. We are looking for a pair of old boat oars, fishing tackle and a cane pole to add to the display. New Land O' Lakes Display

Another new exhibit is up in the Depot Museum. Land O' Lakes was a big part of Aitkin's history, from the creamery to the turkey processing plant. Click here to see a slideshow of this extensive exhibit. (March 30, 2013)

Immigration of Swedes from Klövsjö to Aitkin

Jennie Hakes has translated a small portion of a book from the Klövsjö Local Historical Society. In the late 1800s, one-third of the population of this small town in northern Sweden emigrated to the United States, many of them settling in Aitkin County. Jennie's great-grandfather Olof Hanson was one of them. Our featured photo at the left is from this book. You can read this translation here. (March 11, 2013)
