Education

The Aitkin County Historical Society offers educational programs for schools, civic organizations and groups such as our "Traveling Trunk" program. There is an Immigrant Trunk and a Native American Trunk available for programs. We also offer a program regarding Loggers and the Timber Industry.

Special events such as Festival of Adventures provide a living history environment for learning about Minnesota and regional history as well as a special School Day tailored to school children learning Minnesota history. Contact us with any questions you may have regarding our educational programs.

 

Preservation

The Aitkin County Historical Society is entrusted with the preservation, cataloging and of important artifacts, images, oral histories, personal documents, and records that pertain to our county heritage. Many of the items are available for study by special arrangements or are displayed for public viewing.

 

Interpretation

Through special exhibits and events the Aitkin County Historical Society interprets the various aspects of county history. With artifacts, images and other aspects of our collection, the society attempts to provide insight into the workings our our past and explore our heritage.

 

Research

Through the collections of the Aitkin County Historical Society, those wishing to research aspects of county/local history, family genealogy, riverboat history, fur trade history or specific materials are invited to contact us to make special arrangements for access or to inquire about specific resources.

This publication offers a pictorial history of the county in a beautifully bound and quality publication.

This publication is an account of the Marcus Nelson family and brings to life the toils and hardships of immigrants coming to a new land before the turn of the century.

A Minnesota Remembrance, Volume 2: From Pinery Camps to the Columbus Day Holocaust
This publication is a companion to volume 1. It creates a 3-dimensional picture of what it took earn a living, build homes and towns, work in pinery camps and deal with nature's fury. It concludes with events surrounding the Cloquet-Moose Lake forest fires on Columbus Day, Oct. 12, 1918.
