Welcome to the Great River Strings Website

Arnie Anderson was born in Brainerd, Minnesota in 1944.  He received his BA in music from St Cloud State.  From 1969 – 1972 he taught orchestra music at Mankato, Mn. High School.  He moved to Cremona, Italy where he studied violin making from 1973 to 1976.  He returned to Minneapolis, Mn where he worked in a violin shop for two years.

He married (Louise) in 1979 and moved to his Grandfather Anderson’s old Swedish homestead in Garrison, Mn.  There he raised 3 children, Brenden, Sarah and Mindy.  (Note: Brenden and Sarah also make instruments. )

Arnie is self employed and from a shop in his home makes violins, violas, cellos, basses, and harps.  To date he has created 360 instruments.  He is a member of the Skal Klub Spelman (a Minnesota Scandinavian folk music group).  He has written many folk tunes for the group especially for special birthdays and weddings ("Brides March" for his daughter's wedding and "Mattie's Lullaby" for his granddaughter).

His two most current CD's are "Scandinavian Pot Luck" and "Barn Burner" on the Timmerhus Productions Label.  They include "Karin Butler's Shottis",  "Karen O'Connorson's Waltz"  and "Lois' Waltz".  In the spring of 2008 he wrote and performed "Romance for Violin and Cello" with the Great River Strings which featured Arnie and his daughter Sarah on the two solo instruments.  Also featured was his "March in Scandinavian Style" which combined the sounds of the Great River Strings and the Skal Klubben Spelmanslag fiddle group.

At present Arnie is interested in writing string music to be used as performance pieces for the Ripple River Strings and the Great River Strings.  His goal is to provide an opportunity for beginning string players to play with more advanced musicians in order to enhance their excitement and appreciation of string music.
